Norton Security Interfearence

Post by RHoL495 »

Downloaded the Autopatcher zip file ( Ver: 6.2.02 ) to Update a Windows 7 New install. The Security Software will not let me run the software in it's normal mode without over riding the security. is this normal ? is it ok to run the software ?

While I could never completely set aside your fears that this software is not "bad" since I am just some guy on the internet (who maintains this software), I do my best to assure you that the software will not do anything you don't want it to. As for the security issue that is because the software is does not carry a verified signed security certificate and is asking for admin rights.

If I had $110 to give away a year (besides my current website domain costs ) I could afford the certificate to alleviate your fears. However this software is given as a service to all for free. If Norton is just popping up a window that asks something along the lines of "This is not signed, do you want to trust it?" I urge you to hit the yes button.

There's nothing wrong with being cautious, but unfortunately security software has become too cautious at times, even the OS itself. The dev of foobar2000 has basically given up and has some nasty things to say about security certificates. Read his viewpoint here -> http://www.foobar2000.org/ -> follow his Microsoft Smart Screen issue if interested. The link title uses profanity so I didn't point to it directly.

It was only a few months back my AV flagged VLC Media Player. When opening VLC every plugin was blocked as malicious (about 30). The dialog gave me 1 option, to send a report for each instance, didn't allow me the option of 'Ignoring' the erroneous warnings altogether. Disabling the AV security shield didn't help either. I could always close VLC and find something else to do. Well, I had to click the red X for every plugin, this seemed to move ahead, then VLC was allowed to open.

VirusTotal is a nice resource to make use of when uncertain. It is routine for a few of the tools to flag just about everything you pass by it so don't panic at a couple of frowns. Here's a scan of both the AP forums and AP 6202 zip I just did.
