Re: AutoPatcher Windows 7 (x86) Updates

Post by Whatacrock »

Have edited and corrected all the affected modules, checked and now appear correct..

Comparing the "this update is not applicable to this system" I have the additional modules:

In "NonCritical"
KB2488113
KB2484033
KB2524375
KB2505438
KB2511250
KB2522422

Also in "Critical"
KB2818604 -- AMD Microcode

Will investigate these further and correct as needed, question then -- do these also show in autopatcher as needing to be installed (ie display in black) ??

Update: Have had some success with 3 out of the seven, those being KB2505438, KB2511250, and KB2522422
As for the update KB2818604 have had no joy whatsoever --- may have to leave this as it is !!!!!
The 3 remaining may do the same as for 2818604..

Yes, they show up in black and the Criticial ones have a checkmark, Non-Critical ones are black, but no checkmark.

Re: KB2818604 - this one may be interesting because I do run AP in a virtual machine. Now it should be reporting back that it's on an Intel processor since that's what the host machine is, so it might say exactly that: Not applicable to this system since uploading AMD microcode to an Intel processor is probably not a good idea. Is it possible that AP's CPU detection is failing in a VM? I don't know how AP vs. how the update itself determines the CPU. Do you have a chunk of detection code that I could run inside and outside the VM?

I don't really know enough about the patch: should it always install and then autodetect if there's an AMD CPU and upload microcode, or not install unless on an AMD system?

I too run an Intel Processor in and out with a virtual machine. This is why it's not applicable. I believe that the Intel Processor will NOT accept AMD microcode in any case, I may be wrong...

This update appears to be rather difficult one, I currently have a system here that is running an AMD so I checked all possible registry entries in a chance that there was a suitable one, NOTHING!!!
Microsoft are also being very vague in regards to this update, there solution is to check via Device Manager, the HardwareId's to tell if it's an Intel or AMD system

Go figure that out !!!!

BTW have uploaded the latest to the main list, so please give it a try and report your findings fingers crossed ..

Downloaded list.

Looks good - everything is blue under Critical and Recommended on x86. I take it that you just removed the update for AMD microcode, for now?

Re: processor manufacturer:

What does this reg key (VendorIdentifier) say on an AMD CPU?

This is from the VM that I have been testing on:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0]
"Component Information"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"Identifier"="x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7"
"Configuration Data"=hex(9):ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"ProcessorNameString"="Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 2.66GHz"
"VendorIdentifier"="GenuineIntel"
"FeatureSet"=dword:a08f3fff
"~MHz"=dword:00000c83
"Update Signature"=hex:00,00,00,00,05,07,00,00
"Update Status"=dword:00000002
"Previous Update Signature"=hex:00,00,00,00,05,07,00,00

KB2816804 is still included so that others who have AMD systems can update their microcode...

Fired up the AMD machine and checked the reg key, here are the findings
