A clean install of Windows 8.0 requires 179 updates (two are "optional")to be installed before the 8.1 update will install.

How about an update pack for Autopatcher that's just those 179 updates so PCs that factory restore to 8.0 can be updated to 8.1 without having to go through Windows Update for all the prerequisites?

@ Galene, there are Windows 8 releases available, they however are on another list as they are no longer supported.

What you need to do is start autopatcher, click options, and in the url bar add a"2" (without quotes) after releases, click OK. This will present you a new list of releases available. These releases may or may not produce a "one or more files failed verification" but still usable to update a bare Windows 8 install to the point to allow for upgrade to Windows 8.1.

BTW.... You can get a Windows 8.1 ISO now from Microsoft that will accept your Windows 8 Key (or recognize and accept it automatically if it's in your bios hardware).

So, people don't have to install Windows 8 first in order to then install Windows 8.1 anymore.
It's also my understanding that the Windows 10 ISO will do the exact same, except all of the keys.
Not sure how far back it goes. I think for maybe Windows 7 ones also if installing Windows 10. Not sure if installing 8.1.

Will 8.1 install over an OEM 8.0 without mucking things up? Quickest way on an OEM box with recovery on the drive would be to do the recovery, apply the prerequisite updates, then the 8.1 update.

Often that is the only way to restore some factory installed software. Doing a wipe and clean install direct to 8.1 will not get that stuff back.
